Back in AD 900, the Benedictine monks whom later became the Knight Hospitallers under the supervision of the Blessed Peter Gerard nursed the injured and the needy back to health. The formation of St. John Ambulance Association in the England back in 1877 to teach first aid and the St. John Ambulance Brigade a decade later allow the volunteer members to put into practice had leant.

Since the first St. John Ambulance activity in Malaya in 1908 under the Federated Malay States (FRM) Railways, the predecessor of the present Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM), and the Medical Auxillary Services (MAS), St. John Ambulance in Malaya/Malaysia has been an active participant in major sports, recreational and other activities where first aid assistance is needed.

SJAM WP has over 1,500 volunteer members of various ages whom have devoted an equivalent of more than 300,000 man-hours annually to provide first aid and other emergency services. These members are trained and examined annually to ensure they are updated with the latest life-saving and first aid techniques based on the syllabus set by the joint committee of St. John Ambulance, St. Andrew's Ambulance and the British Red Cross in conjunction with the Resuscitation Council (UK).
